ethics in the media

A suspect "confession"
1. A murder case in Colorado came to an end in Thailand.  John Mark Karr was accused of killing JonBenet Ramsey on Christmas night by strangling them to death in Colorado. He was detained after journalism professor reported the emails that he had sent him over the years about how John and Patsy Ramsey were unfairly implicated in their daughters death. Karr was released as not guilty but was later detained for child pornography.

2. The professors involvement with the story was was important to finding a possible killer because, in the end they only found out that he was a child pornographer, which was still good because he protected children from Karr. But he never tested the accuracy of the emails and they never connected him the the murder, only child pornography.

Using the 'holocaust' metaphor
1. In 2003 PETA used a metaphor relating the holocaust to the slaughter of animals. Because the holocaust is a very emotional subject in Germany and the rest of the world, Germany sued PETA. But the original court ruling was changed due to the European court of human rights in 2012.

2. I believe that using the metaphor was really inappropriate because of how offensive it was to a a lot of people and the use of the highly graphic photos in Germany and Poland made it even worse. I believe this because the mass murder of ones race should not be used to gain support for an organization.

Arrgh! pirates! and the press.

  1. Just before a release of a pop-rock band album was released all 10 songs were leaked online for everyone to hear. The leak caused the band to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars because fans chose to illegally download the music instead of purchasing the album. to make it worse, news would report on the situation like  Rolling Stone and Billboard. They would include a link within the story to listen to the songs that were leaked which would not help the band recover the money they lost.
  2. In my opinion I think that the people that released the leak of the new album are to blame. And the news was just trying report the situation, the news was just doing what it was made to do, report on a topic that would appeal to an audience. I think they should have kept the link to the illegal music private and anonymous because then you are making things worse and causing more people to download the music leading to lesser profit for the band.
